Walk With Me
Brand Identity, Typography
Walk With Me follows Hussain Shah Rezaie on his remarkable journey from a remote Afghan village to a refugee detention facility in Indonesia and finally, after nearly a decade in limbo, to a new life as a permanent resident of Aotearoa New Zealand.
The Walk With Me identity was designed to represent Hussain and his journey, to allow him to tell his story, while additionally promoting awareness and help raise vital funds in order to support him with his immigration plea.
The logo uses the initials WWM (Walk With Me), the ‘M’ centred over the two ‘W’s’ to represent Hussain front and centre in the journey he was taking. The letterforms were softened and stylised, so they looked less like latin characters, and became more individualised unique shapes. The result was to form a strong and distinctive graphic that reflected Afghanistan art and Arabic typography. Hussain concurred suggesting it had the typography of Persian heritage and that ‘it has an instant appeal’.
Filson Soft was chosen as the font choice for the logotype with the intention to deliver both personality and longevity. Serif font Freight Text Pro, known for its versatility and excellent use in text, was ideal as a secondary font for both headings and large blocks of copy.
The colour palette was a gentle nod to Hussain’s heritage, Hazara; an ethnic group and a principal component of Afghanistan’s population, known for their embroidery work with distinctive colours. On applying the colours I was able to distinguish the three initials and allow them to intertwine and weave in and out of each other.
